◎講読クラス　( The End of the Affair P.125～P.129)

批評家Waterburyと連れ立っていた若い女性Sylviaとの葬儀場までの同行が述べられます。彼女は若く、まだ未熟さそのものですが、Greene の意図が垣間見られます。愛する人の死と残された人間、若さとそして消え行く若さと老い、生命力とそれに伴う欲望、人間のあがきを描くGreeneの筆致に息を呑みます。眩しいほどの若さに抗って、うそをついてしまうMauriceの苦しい思いが続きます。

"It (cremation) wouldn't matter to me one way or the other," and wondered immediately why I had bothered to lie,　because it had mattered, it must have mattered, for it was I in the end who had persuaded Henry against burial.

場面は変わって、葬儀前の話となります。教会葬儀を申し出る神父、Henry と火葬を主張するMauriceがいます。Sarahの死後、彼女と入れ替わって彼女の元愛人だったMauriceが家族の一員のように遇される様子はおかしくもあり、解せないところではあります。神父の描写もここまでcomicalに表現しなくてはならないのかとGreene のキリスト教観に疑問を持ち、悪意を感じますが、どの人間に対しても持つGreene の人間に対する皮肉さの表れと言えるもので、これがGreeneの作家になった原点ではないかと思います。

米国人の宗教観に関するレポート。６９％の米国人は、宗教は米国人の重要な部分と言うが、

人口統計学上、無信仰者は米国社会ではかなりの部分を占める。いまだその数は議論の余地があるが、複数調査では１０人に一人が神を信じないと言い、３％が自称無信仰者と言うが、その１０倍以上ではないかとの指摘もある。これから検証を進めていく。
